lyrics

Dollar stores, liquor stores, chicken and church
Dollar stores, liquor stores, chicken and church
Sell your soul but what is it worth
(Keep gettin those) Dollar stores, liquor stores, chicken and church

Verse 1
We're bigger than this, we're better than that
Your steaks on the grill, I trimmed off the fat
You're in the lunchline, but they don't say hello
This is a team sport why you flying solo

You're flying under the radar, your lights are too dim
Them sharks will eat you man, cause you can't swim
Break down them boxes, then throw them away
Get the bike with the fat tires, eliminate the sway

Verse 2
We're driving to the station but always missing the train
Happens so often we ignore the pain
We've always been worker bees, but never the queen
We build our own hive they call it obscene

They call it misguided to love your own
Just build the picket fence, so the sheep won't roam
The silence is so loud I had to plug up my ears
Too much smoke from the landfill, I had to wipe away my tears

Verse 3
They've already pushed a boulder down the hill
But it keeps rolling even if they stay still
Feels like you're running a marathon with a weight on your back
But you're really on a treadmill and you're still getting fat

Cause they feed you slop, its that urban cuisine
Put the gunpowder in the bowl, keep that pit-bull mean
Reduce your humanity, to a bump and grind
They eat the melon and give you the rind

Verse 4
I still see redlines, in my community
You debated my destruction with impunity
No milk and honey on my side of town
It's a 3 card Monty, used to hold us down

But I see light, when we touch and agree
Bought a new driver, hit the ball of the tee
Watch it soar thru the atmosphere, like an eagle released
This is the spirit of my people , truth to power will never cease

about

Janeff The Poet Chicago, Illinois

aneff the Poet’s latest single “Call It Freedom” is certain to be
a classic in the same vein as Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and Sam Cook’s
“A Change is Gonna Come”. Powered by a synch base and a staccato drumbeat,
Janeff’s lyrics seem to intertwine with the music to build a pleasing sound of
rhythm and commentary.
